New York Daily News
In the Huffington Post article detailing Naomi Schaefer Riley, a Chronicle Of Higher Education Blogger, fired for saying African American Studies is a 'Claptrap'. (Gene Demby 2012) Riley is entitled to her own opinion, however, I totally disagree with her point of view. I have learned several lessons from the African American Studies' courses I have taken in college. In fact, learning about your own culture is intriguing and I feel that is vital to one's knowledge to know about his/her history.
For someone to downplay the significance of an educational course seems very pessimistic. This can easily offend teachers who teach the course, students who participate in this course, and even colleges that offer this course as a major. Liz McMillen, the site's editor, posted an apology for Riley's blog post to any one that felt offended. McMillen stated,
"We now agree that Ms. Riley’s blog posting did not meet The Chronicle’s basic editorial standards for reporting and fairness in opinion articles. As a result, we have asked Ms. Riley to leave the Brainstorm blog." (Gene Demby 2012)
Being fired from the Brainstorm Blog fits the crime, but will this be the last time? Maybe. Maybe not. These type of situations happen numerous of times. Reporters express their true feelings at one point of time or another in there career. I actually commend Riley for stating her opinion because she isn't the only on with the same opinion.
Hunnington Post article.
